A downloadable project

This is a more conceptual idea for the design of a game. I don’t have much experience with game making tools but I think this is a really cool idea for 2D platformers. The idea is to add uncertainty to platformers similar to roguelikes in a way.

In order to create this uncertainty I think at the start of each section or level the player is given one of three abilities at random. Each level would be designed in a way so that each ability would still be able to progress. Similar to roguelikes on the completion of the level you proceed to the next and are given another random ability out of three. The catch is that if you die you return to the starting level again.

The main point that I want to make clear in the design for this idea is that the focus is not on fighting things but on tight platforming. Each ability would create a different way to traverse each level. However, I think it could be appropriate to have a bossfight at the end of each level that incorporates the level's platforming design. Just like roguelikes again if you fail you go back to the start.

(Katana Zero First combat room)

(Celeste Chapter 1 first room)

The examples above display what I'm trying to say a little better. The abilities are not for combat purposes but only to progress through an obstacle course in unique ways for each individual run.

From my own experience, I believe that games should be this punishing. Only through experience are you able to progress and the dedicated players can win the whole game and win with any combination of abilities on the levels. On a side note, say if you beat the whole level without taking damage you get a reward that helps you on the next level.
